By now, most of you already have your holiday plans and gifts locked down. But for the last-minute planners like me, or anyone looking for some extra holiday fun, you have one final weekend to catch the Christkindlmarket. Here’s what you should know.
1. It really is that crowded.
They say 1 million people go to the Chriskindlmarket every year, and after visiting last weekend, I believe it. The lines for food were long and growing just 20 minutes after opening. On any day of the week, hundreds of people walk through the market in Daley Plaza, but weekends are especially packed. Folks come in groups, and they love to chat, eat, and stop in the middle of the crowd to admire the sights. Be prepared to get close to strangers, and if at all possible, go early.
2. It’s worth it despite the crowd, especially for visitors.
If you’re on a solo trip to Chicago, the market gives you an opportunity to meet locals and other visitors in the same place. Think of this as an upside to #1. Sure, the market is crowded, but it’s filled with people from the city, suburbs and beyond. Chances are high that you’ll end up sharing a bench or eating at a table with someone new, which is great if you’re traveling and looking to meet other people.
3. About the food: Get the bratwurst with the sauerkraut.
If the German-speaking couple next to me in line ordered it, I figured it couldn’t be too bad. Just don’t forget the condiments! Also try the potato pancakes with applesauce and/or sour cream, warm apple strudel, raclette (bread cheese), and authentic German and European candies. And don’t forget the Glühwein (hot wine)! If you’re visiting, you might not know this, but Chicagoans love to collect the mugs that the Glühwein and other beverages are served in. The design changes every year; this year’s is heart-shaped and makes for a lovely souvenir.
4. Keep in mind, most of these places do not accept plastic, so don’t get stuck waiting in line for the ATM. Bring cash.
If you forget, stop at Walgreens nearby. At least you’ll be warm indoors while you get it! As far as food goes, expect to spend about $7-15 per item.
5. It’s close to many other Chicago sites.
You can spend some time walking from booth to booth at the market, and when you’re done, you can explore nearby. Block 37, a shopping complex with an AMC Theater, is across the street on State, along with Macy’s (the old Marshall Field’s) and all the other stores on State. My personal favorite: The Millennium Park Christmas tree. Head to the market in the late afternoon, then walk 3-4 blocks to view the tree on Michigan Ave.
The Chriskindlmarket has been an area favorite since 1996, and if you want to know more (including details about the Naperville and Milwaukee locations), visit the helpful sites below.
